Description
This homemade apple pie filling is made with fresh apples, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. It's perfect for pies, crisps, turnovers, cheesecakes, and more. Makes about 3 cups of apple pie filling.
Ingredients
- 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 60 g (¼ cup) unsalted butter
- 65 g (⅓ cup) light brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into small or large pieces, depending on how you plan to use the filling.
- Place the apples in a large bowl and toss with the lemon juice and ground cinnamon until evenly coated.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until the sugar begins to dissolve.
- Add the apple mixture and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and lightly caramelized. The filling should be glossy but the apples should still hold their shape.
- Remove from the heat and let the filling cool completely before using in pies, pastries, or storing.
Notes
Storage:Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Tips:
- Use firm apples for the best texture.
- Mix sweet and tart apples for balanced flavor.
- Cut evenly so the apples cook at the same rate.
- Don't overcook to keep the apples from becoming mushy.
- Cool completely before using or storing.
