Ingredients
Donuts
- 80 g (⅓ cup) sugar - granulated sugar
- 180 g (¾ cup) buttermilk
- 75 g (⅓ cup) vegetable oil - grapeseed oil
- 1 egg - room temperature
- 190 g (1 ½ cups) flour - all-purpose flour
- 50 g (½ cup) almond meal
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 pinch salt
Maple Glaze
- 120 g (1 cup) powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1–2 tbsp milk or water (adjust for consistency)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Donuts:
- Preheat your oven to 356°F (180°C) and grease a donut pan with butter or nonstick spray.
- In a bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, buttermilk, egg, vanilla extract, and maple syrup until smooth.
- Add the flour, almond meal, baking powder, and salt, then mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter evenly into the donut pan cavities, filling about ¾ full.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack.
Maple Glaze:
- In a bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. The glaze should be slightly thick but still pourable.
- Dip each cooled donut into the glaze, then place on a wire rack to allow the excess to drip off.
- Sprinkle with crushed nuts or extra toppings, if desired. Let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
Storage:
- Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Refrigerator: Keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Let sit at room temperature before serving.
- Freezer: Freeze unglazed donuts for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature and glaze before serving.
Tips:
- Use a digital scale for accurate measurements and the best texture.
- Don’t overmix the batter to keep the donuts light and fluffy.
- Substituting buttermilk: Mix ¾ cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice, let sit for 5 minutes.
- For a thicker glaze, add more powdered sugar until you reach the right consistency.
- Grease the donut pan well to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal.
