Chocolate fudge frosting is a rich and creamy chocolate frosting with a smooth fudgy texture perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and layer cakes.

    bowl of chocolate fudge frosting

This homemade chocolate fudge frosting is made with real dark chocolate for an intense chocolate flavor and an ultra smooth finish.

As a French cake blogger, I use this chocolate frosting recipe when I want a softer and more decadent alternative to classic chocolate buttercream.

    Why you’ll love this recipe

    • Rich chocolate flavor with real melted dark chocolate and cocoa notes.
    • Smooth fudgy texture perfect for spreading, frosting, and layer cakes.
    • Easy homemade frosting made with simple ingredients and no complicated steps.

    Ingredients you need

    • Dark chocolate: Use dark chocolate around 54% cocoa, finely chopped.
    • Heavy cream: Full-fat heavy whipping cream.
    • Unsalted butter: Softened butter at room temperature.
    • Powdered sugar: Sifted for a smoother frosting texture.
    • Vanilla extract: Pure vanilla extract for extra flavor.

    Tips for this recipe

    • Use good chocolate: Choose a good quality dark chocolate for the best flavor.
    • Finely chop the chocolate: Smaller pieces melt faster and more evenly.
    • Do not overheat the cream: Heat just until hot and steaming.
    • Let it cool slightly: The frosting thickens as it cools at room temperature.
    • Too firm after chilling: Let the frosting sit at room temperature before spreading.

How To Make Chocolate Fudge Frosting

This chocolate fudge frosting is my softer and creamier version of classic chocolate ganache frosting.

Place the finely chopped dark chocolate in a large bowl.

Heat the heavy cream until hot and steaming, then pour it over the chocolate.

How To Use Chocolate Fudge Frosting

    • Spread over chocolate cakes and birthday cakes.
    • Pipe onto cupcakes and chocolate desserts.
    • Use as a filling for layer cakes and sandwich cakes.
    • Pair with vanilla cake, brownies, or chocolate cupcakes.

This chocolate fudge frosting is perfect for my Matilda cake recipe or any homemade chocolate layer cake.

    Storage

Store the chocolate fudge frosting covered in the fridge for up to 5 days and let it soften at room temperature before using.

    Variations

    • Milk chocolate version: Use milk chocolate for a sweeter frosting.
    • Espresso fudge frosting: Add espresso powder for a deeper chocolate flavor.
    • Extra dark chocolate frosting: Use 70% dark chocolate for a richer taste.
    • Whipped fudge frosting: Whip the frosting slightly for a lighter texture.

    Recipe Questions

Is chocolate fudge frosting the same as ganache?

Chocolate fudge frosting is thicker and creamier than classic chocolate ganache frosting because it contains butter and powdered sugar.

Can I use this frosting for layer cakes?

Yes, this frosting is perfect for frosting cakes, cupcakes, and layered chocolate cakes.

Can I make chocolate fudge frosting ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the frosting in advance and keep it refrigerated until ready to use.

Why is my chocolate fudge frosting too firm?

The frosting becomes firmer when chilled because of the chocolate and butter. Let it sit at room temperature before using.
