Coffee buttercream is smooth, creamy and fluffy, with a rich coffee flavor that tastes just like a creamy latte.

This coffee buttercream is one of my favorite ways to add a rich coffee flavor to cakes and cupcakes, with a smooth and fluffy texture.
I love how quick it is to make, with a creamy latte-like flavor that pairs especially well with chocolate and vanilla cakes.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Rich coffee flavor – Tastes like a creamy espresso latte.
- Smooth & fluffy – Perfect for piping and frosting cakes or cupcakes.
- Quick & easy – Made with instant espresso powder and simple ingredients.
Ingredients You Need
- Unsalted butter – Use well-softened butter so it whips easily into a smooth, creamy frosting.
- Powdered sugar – Its fine texture creates a smooth buttercream; avoid granulated sugar, which would leave a grainy texture.
- Instant espresso powder – Use a fine instant espresso powder for a concentrated coffee flavor that dissolves easily.
- Heavy cream – Warm it slightly before adding the espresso powder, then let it dissolve completely before using.
- Vanilla extract – Use vanilla extract or vanilla flavoring.
- Fine salt – Just a small pinch to balance the flavors.

How to Make Coffee Buttercream
This is my classic whipped buttercream recipe flavored with coffee for a smooth, fluffy coffee frosting.

Beat the buttercream on medium speed for another 2–3 minutes until smooth, fluffy and evenly colored.
Adjust the consistency with a little extra heavy cream if needed, then mix briefly on low speed for a smoother finish with fewer air bubbles.
Tips for the Best Coffee Frosting
- Use very soft butter for a smooth, fluffy texture that whips easily.
- Dissolve the espresso completely in the warm cream and give it enough time to dissolve before adding it to the frosting.
- Let the coffee cream cool before adding it so it doesn’t soften or melt the butter.
- Add the coffee mixture gradually to keep the buttercream smooth and control the consistency.
- Mix on low speed at the end to remove excess air bubbles and get a smoother finish.
Ways to Use Coffee Buttercream
This coffee buttercream frosting is perfect for piping, filling and decorating cakes, cupcakes and other desserts.
- Pipe onto cupcakes for a smooth, fluffy coffee frosting.
- Fill and frost layer cakes, especially chocolate or vanilla cakes.
- Pair with chocolate cake for a mocha-inspired flavor.
- Use with vanilla cake for a creamy latte-style combination.
- Pipe onto coffee cupcakes for an extra boost of coffee flavor.
Storage

Recipe Variations
- Mocha – Add cocoa powder for a chocolate-coffee flavor.
- Stronger coffee – Add a little more instant espresso powder for a bolder flavor.
- Caramel coffee – Add a spoonful of salted caramel sauce for a caramel latte flavor.
- Less intense – Reduce the espresso powder for a softer, milky coffee flavor.
Recipe Questions
Can I use instant coffee instead of espresso powder?
Yes, but instant espresso powder gives a stronger, richer coffee flavor. Make sure it dissolves completely before adding it.
Can I use brewed coffee?
I don’t recommend it because it adds too much liquid and can make the buttercream too soft.
Why is my coffee buttercream grainy?
The espresso may not have dissolved completely. Mix it thoroughly into the warm cream and let it sit until smooth.
Can I make it ahead of time?
Yes. Keep it refrigerated in an airtight container, then bring it to room temperature and mix until creamy before using.
What flavors go well with coffee frosting?
Chocolate, vanilla, caramel and hazelnut all pair especially well with coffee.

- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: About 600 g, enough to frost 12 cupcakes or fill and frost a small cake.
Description
Easy coffee buttercream with a smooth, fluffy texture and rich, creamy espresso flavor, perfect for cakes and cupcakes.
Ingredients
- 200 g (¾ cup + 2 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened
- 300 g (2 ½ cups) powdered sugar
- 2–3 teaspoon instant espresso powder
- 70 ml (¼ cup + 2 tsp) heavy cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch fine salt
Instructions
- Warm the heavy cream in a small saucepan or microwave until hot but not boiling.
- Dissolve the instant espresso powder in the warm cream, stirring thoroughly. Let it sit for a few minutes so the espresso dissolves completely, then allow the mixture to cool until just lukewarm or at room temperature.
- Beat the softened butter with an electric mixer or stand mixer on medium-high speed for 3–5 minutes, until very smooth, creamy and slightly lighter in color.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar in 2–3 additions, mixing on low speed after each addition until fully incorporated. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.
- Add the coffee cream, vanilla and salt and mix on low speed until incorporated. Increase to medium speed and beat for about 2–3 minutes until the frosting is smooth, fluffy and evenly colored.
- Adjust the consistency if necessary with a small amount of heavy cream, adding it one teaspoon at a time.
- Finish on low speed for about 1 minute to reduce air bubbles and create a smoother buttercream.
