At home, we eat them by the handful and they're my children's favorite candy. We also make them into delicious m&m cookies to change from classic cookie recipes like the famous chocolate chip cookies.

M&M's are just amazing in desserts, they're found in lots of recipes and for adding a rainbow of color to your favorite treats like in this recipe for cookies with m&m's chocolate candies.

    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Burst of Color and Fun: These cookies are loaded with M&Ms, adding a pop of color and a fun, sweet crunch to every bite.
    • Soft and Chewy: Perfectly baked for a soft, chewy texture with crispy edges that make them irresistible.
    • Kid-Friendly and Nostalgic: They’re a hit with kids and bring back happy memories for adults – the perfect treat for all ages!

    Ingredients you need

Here are the ingredients needed to make these m&m's cookies:

    • Butter: Use soft, unsalted butter, preferably softened. You can heat it slightly in the microwave if you haven't had time to take it out in advance.
    • Sugar: A mixture of white granulated sugar and flavored sugar, such as brown or light brown sugar or even cane sugar.
    • Egg: at room temperature, take it out of the fridge in advance or run it under hot water for a few moments.
    • Flour: white wheat all-purpose flour.
    • Yeast: You can also make a mixture of baking powder and baking soda for softer cookies.
    • Vanilla and salt: Use pure vanilla extract to flavor the cookies and fleur de sel (coarse sea salt) to bring out all the flavors.
    • M&M: You can take the regular chocolate M&Ms or the mini M&Ms, which you can also replace with any other candy like Smarties candies.

Step 5: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. / 180°C and prepare baking sheets with a sheet of parchment paper and form cookie dough balls with your hands or an ice cream cookie scoop and place on the prepared baking sheet separate from 2 inches apart to prevent them from sticking during baking.

Step 6: Place the cookies sheet in the refrigerator for 1 hour or in the freezer for 15 minutes.

Step 7: Bake the cookies in a preheated oven for about 12 minutes until they are golden on top.

Enjoy! Let them cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before carefully moving them and let them cool completely in a cooling rack.

    Tips for this recipe

    • Chill the Dough: Refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes to prevent spreading and enhance the flavors.
    • Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature for a smoother dough.
    • Don’t Overmix: Mix just until combined to keep cookies soft and chewy.
    • Press Extra M&Ms: Add a few M&Ms on top of each dough ball before baking for a colorful, bakery-style look.
    • Watch the Baking Time: Remove cookies when the edges are lightly golden, even if the center looks soft – they’ll firm up as they cool.

    Storage instructions

Room Temperature: Store M&Ms cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days to keep them soft and fresh.Freezer: Freeze baked cookies in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Cookie Dough: Freeze cookie dough balls on a tray until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Bake directly from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes to the baking time.

    Variations & Substitutions

    • Peanut Butter M&Ms Cookies: Swap half of the butter for creamy peanut butter and use peanut M&Ms for a nutty twist.
    • Chocolate M&Ms Cookies: Replace ¼ cup (30g) of flour with cocoa powder for a rich, chocolatey version.
    • Oatmeal M&Ms Cookies: Add 1 cup (90g) of oats to the dough for extra texture and flavor.
    • Mini M&Ms: Use mini M&Ms for a fun and colorful cookie with more chocolate in each bite.
    • White Chocolate M&Ms: Substitute regular M&Ms with white chocolate ones for a different flavor profile.
    • Holiday-Themed Cookies: Use seasonal M&Ms for festive cookies perfect for Christmas, Easter, or Halloween.
    • Nutty Addition: Add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for a crunchy texture.

    Recipe Questions

Can I use any type of M&Ms in the cookies? Yes! You can use classic, mini, peanut, or any seasonal M&Ms for different flavors and textures.

How do I prevent my cookies from spreading too much? Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking to help the cookies maintain their shape.

Can I substitute brown sugar with white sugar? You can, but brown sugar adds moisture and chewiness, so replacing it with white sugar may result in a drier cookie.

Can I add other mix-ins like nuts or chocolate chips? Yes! Feel free to add chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or even dried fruit for extra flavor and texture.

How can I make my cookies chewier? Use more brown sugar than white sugar and ensure you don’t overbake the cookies.
