    Tips for this recipe

    • Choose Sweet Apples: Opt for sweet apple varieties like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp. Their natural sweetness will reduce the need for added sugar.
    • Simmer Gently: Place the apple chunks in a saucepan or in a slow cooker and add a small amount of water, just enough to prevent sticking. Cook the apples over low to medium heat to maintain their natural sweetness.
    • Mash or Blend: Once the apples are soft and tender (usually within 15-20 minutes), you can choose to either mash them with a fork for a chunkier texture or use a blender or food processor for a smoother consistency.
    • Taste and Adjust: Before serving, taste the unsweetened applesauce. If you prefer a more sweeter applesauce, you can add a touch of honey or maple syrup,

    Storage instructions

In the fridge: It should only be kept up to a week in the fridge in a mason jar or in an airtight container.

At room temperature: Unless you use a sterilized method of storage then you can leave it at room temperature. But make sure you know the complete method to do it correctly.

How to freeze? Yes, it is also possible to freeze the applesauce. When the applesauce has completely cooled down you can put it in a container with a lid or separate it by portion in storage bags and put them in the freezer for 3 months.

To defrost, place in the refrigerator or leave at room temperature for a while.

    Recipe Variations

    • Add sugar: Although the recipe is delicious without added sugar, you can still add a little for a sweet apple compote. I recommend using natural sugar like maple syrup, or honey or flavored sugar like light brown sugar instead of white sugar.
    • Spiced apple compote: Add warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or allspice for a cozy and aromatic twist.
    • Citrus Zest: Add a tart flavor by incorporating lemon or orange zest to your applesauce.
    • Add lemon juice: Optional, but If you add a little lemon juice is better because it contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) which prevents the degradation of the fruits and allows to keep their color and better conservation. You can replace it with fresh orange juice.
    • Apple cider: the apple cider is optional - it enhances the taste of the apples and gives a wonderful flavor to the compote.
    • Chunky Applesauce: Leave the applesauce slightly chunky for a more textured and chunkier applesauce.
    • Berry Infused: Mix in fresh fruit or frozen berries like with a raspberry compote, blueberries, or strawberries for a burst of fruity goodness.
    • Apple-Pear Blend: Combine apples with pears for a harmonious blend of flavors.
