The best homemade cinnamon applesauce recipe! Just as delicious and unctuous as the one you usually buy in the store! Try it now, it's incredibly easy and quick to make and so useful in your desserts, for the kids or your cakes!
Definitely the easiest homemade recipe ever! There is nothing easier than making homemade applesauce and it is much better in nutritional quality than what you usually buy in the store.
Yes, as easy as it only takes 2 ingredients to make homemade applesauce recipe! Apples and water and 2 optional ingredients that I like to add for flavor, vanilla and cinnamon ground.
It's eaten cold with a spoon, babies love it and so do the grown-ups! I like to mix it with a little Greek yogurt and add a little of my healthy homemade granola recipe.
Add sugar if you like
You're the boss! This is unsweetened applesauce recipe and that's how I like to prepare it. Fruits are already quite sweet enough and that's what makes the difference between industrial desserts that often add a lot of extra sugar and homemade recipes where you can control the composition.
And if your choice is for a sweeter cinnamon applesauce, then choose a natural unrefined sugar, such as honey or maple syrup. A liquid sugar to be added at the end of the preparation.
Useful tools for this recipe
Best apples for applesauce
To make a delicious sauce, I often use this varieties of apples in my desserts, the Royal Gala, Golden apples or Pink lady apples. These types of apples have a firm, crisp, juicy texture and will soften easily when cooked.
And always take your apples in season and especially choose organic apples!
Which sugar add
To add a sweetener to your recipe and especially if you are using less sweet apples also. If you choose a powdered sugar or brown sugar then add it to the apples in the cooking process so that it dissolves completely. If not, use a natural liquid sugar, honey, maple syrup, etc.
Don't miss to add extra flavour
Although only 2 ingredients are needed to make this recipe, I recommend adding some flavoring.
Some vanilla to add a delicate aroma that brings out the flavor of the apple. And a spice that goes perfectly with apples is cinnamon, which adds an autumnal note like in the apple pie recipe.
And if you like spices then why not add a mixture of spices like ginger, nutmeg and cloves.
With or without chunks
Do you like it really smooth or even chunky applesauce? It's up to you to decide which texture you prefer in your applesauce.
Perfect to fill the crust of a tart like the classic apple tart or in my apple pop tarts recipe, or even in a dessert with yoghurt or ice cream.
This is the perfect texture for topping all your pies or as in this apple crumble bar recipe
How to make cinnamon applesauce
Start by preparing your apples, peel all the skin and remove the seeds. Then cut them into small pieces which will help them soften faster during cooking.
Then take a medium sized pan and place the water, cinnamon gourd and apples chunks in it. Heat the mixture over medium heat.
Let the apples cook on low heat for about 10 minutes, until they are melting but still quite firm. Prick the apples with a knife to check for doneness.
Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely before placing it in a glass jar to store in the fridge.
Cook over medium heat for about 20 minutes, until the mixture is smooth and the apples are melting and mashing easily.
Remove from heat and let your apples cool a bit in the pan. Then to completely reduce them to a smooth puree use either a puree masher or for a compote with no pieces use a hand mixer.
Let cool completely then place in a large glass jar with a tight fitting lid and place in the fridge.
How to store Applesauce
At room temperature
It should only be kept in the fridge, unless you use a sterilized method of storage then you can leave it at room temperature. But make sure you know the complete method to do it correctly.
Can I freeze applesauce
Yes it is also possible to freeze the applesauce. When the applesauce has completely cooled down you can put it in a container with a lid or separate it by portion in storage bags and put them in the freezer for 3 months.
To defrost, place in the refrigerator or leave at room temperature for a while.
