Nothing better than a delicious apple banana smoothie for breakfast, paired with my oatmeal banana muffin and I'm ready for my crazy mom-of-4 day ahead 😅.

This smoothie is ice-cold and creamy, just as delicious and satisfying as my banana-date smoothie, and above all very quick to make in just 3 minutes with just a blender (and it works with the thermomix too!).

Inside this smoothie, you'll find simple yet flavorful ingredients like an apple, a frozen banana, milk, and yogurt, complemented by a handful of nuts.

It's free from added sugar, relying on the natural sweetness of fresh fruits for a delightful taste. Plus, I'll share more flavor options below to enhance this nutritious blend.

    Ingredients you need

You need these ingredients to make an Apple and banana smoothie :

    • Banana: Use a medium-ripe banana, but not too ripe. You can also use a fresh banana or frozen bananas for a very cold drink.
    • Apple: Juicy fresh apples such as Gala, Jonagold, Elstar, Granny Smith, or Pink Lady (use organic apples if possible).
    • Milk: the kind you like to drink, dairy milk o non-dairy milk, like me, unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, oat milk, etc.
    • Yogurt: plain sugar-free yogurt or Greek yogurt.
    • Nuts: Optionally, a small handful of nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts, which you can replace with rolled oats, or seeds such as chia or flax seeds, hemp seeds.
    • Vanilla: Pure vanilla extract is optional, but essential for flavoring the smoothie.
    • Cinnamon: As an option, ground cinnamon to flavor the drink or a mixture of pumpkin pie spice or gingerbread spice mix.

How to make Apple and Banana Smoothie

Here are some quick visual instructions. Don't forget that full recipe instructions with exact ingredients can be found in the recipe card below!

    • Step 1: Place the fresh banana slices (or frozen bananas), seedless small pieces of apples, walnuts, milk, yogurt, and vanilla extract in the bowl of a blender.
    • Step 2: Blend on maximum speed for around 1-2 minutes until smooth and creamy.
    • Step 3: Serve the apple-banana smoothie in a tall glass or in a smoothie bowl, and enjoy cold with a straw.

    Tips for this recipe

    • Choose Ripe Bananas: Use ripe bananas for natural sweetness and a creamier texture and if possible frozen bananas for best results.
    • Use Fresh or Frozen Apples: Fresh apples give a crisp taste, while frozen apples make the smoothie colder and thicker.
    • Blend Thoroughly: Ensure all ingredients are well-blended in a high powered blender for a creamy texture.
    • Serve Immediately: For the best flavor and texture, enjoy the smoothie right after blending.

    Storage instructions

In the fridge: This apple smoothie is best eaten quickly, as the banana quickly oxidizes and turns brown. You can add a squeeze of lemon for a tangy note and better preservation.

    Variations & Substitutions

    • Nut butter: You can add a bit of peanut butter, almond butter or other nut puree such as cashew nuts.
    • Other fruits: Make a mix of several fruits, like strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry, keeping the banana as a base and replacing the apple with pear.
    • Sugar: Not required, as bananas and apples provide natural sugar, but if you still want to add some, use honey or maple syrup.
    • Chocolate: for a chocolatey version, add a bit of unsweetened cocoa powder or your morning cocoa.
    • Include a Protein Boost: Add protein powder, chia seeds, or nut butter for a more filling smoothie.
    • Orange juice: Replace milk or yogurt with orange juice or other fruit juice for a fruitier drink.
    • Green apple smoothie: For added nutrition mix in spinach or kale. These greens won’t significantly alter the taste.
    • Spice it Up: Add a pinhc of cinnamon or nutmeg can complement the apple and banana flavors beautifully.
    • With ice cubes: You can replace the milk with ice cubes, or add a few extra cubes for an icy drink.
